The Yorkshire Estate comprises 30,000 acres of moorland, 1,500 acres of woodland and agricultural land, 52 farms and 146 properties. Nestled in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales on the banks of the River Wharfe, Bolton Abbey has over 400,000 visitors per year.

The landscape is the “jewel in the crown” of Yorkshire’s many landscapes and the 30,000 acres of beautiful countryside boast over 80 miles of footpaths to walk and explore, providing something for all ages. From our ever changing events programme providing activities for children to fishing on the River Wharfe, you’ll find a host of activity awaiting you.

Bolton Abbey has been carefully managed by the Cavendish family since 1755. The landscape at Bolton Abbey inspires, and has been admired in the past by artists such as Turner, Ruskin and Royle, as well as the poet Wordsworth.

The Yorkshire Estate also has many holiday cottages, barn conversions and large farmhouses available to rent. The portfolio also has an excess of 80 commercial opportunities from offices and storage units to delicatessens and garages available to rent with flexible terms.

CAREERS WITHIN THE YORKSHIRE ESTATE

The Yorkshire Estate is centred around the beautiful village of Bolton Abbey where we operate an in-house post office, shop and the Strid stream and visitor centre. There are exciting “welly walks” for children and a sandy beach and barbeque area for all to enjoy.

Explore the type of roles available below.

  • Visitor welcome assistant - in these posts you will welcome our visitors to the car park, take payments and provide directions and information. These are generally part-time jobs over the open season.
  • Parkland management - the garden and parkland at Bolton Abbey are immaculately maintained by a specialist team who manage the hedges, streams, walks and walls. You can join the team as an apprentice or with previous horticultural experience.
  • Education - education is important to us. The Education team are part of the larger Chatsworth House Trust and work hard to provide indoor and outdoor educational opportunities across all sectors. Full and part-time roles exist across the team and you will normally require experience or qualifications in this field to join us.
  • Fisheries - working on the river winding through Bolton Abbey, the team manage the river for fishing and as a wildlife habitat.
  • Forestry - this team look after our extensive woodland as well as providing logs and kindling for sale and internal use. The team are working hard on new plantings to help the environment. Roles are for skilled and apprentice posts.
  • Game keeping - the moors at Bolton Abbey are given over to grouse and are managed using modern methods to preserve the birds and the environment.
  • Rural estate management - this team manage the upkeep and letting of residential, commercial and agricultural properties on the estate. We have supporting administrative staff and specialist land agents in these roles.
  • Rural buildings management - this is a small team of surveyors and contract managers who organise the preservation and repairs of all our properties.
  • Customer service assistant - you will provide exceptional customer service in our retail shop or post office and be willing to learn about the attractions of Bolton Abbey to be able to answer the many questions from our visitors. Jobs are mostly part-time and seasonal and casual work is also available.
