Irish Estate

Lismore Castle has a rich and varied history. The area was originally occupied by Lismore Abbey, an important monastery and seat of learning, established in the early 7th century. In 1185 Prince John built the first castellan here and on becoming Monarch, King John passed it to the church and it served as the Bishop’s Palace. Lismore was later acquired by Sir Walter Raleigh (1589) who eventually sold it to Richard Boyle. Richard later became the first Earl of Cork.

Lismore Castle remained in the Boyle family until the marriage of Lady Charlotte Elizabeth Boyle to the 4th Duke of Devonshire in 1748. Each generation of the Cavendish family has lovingly and extensively restored the castle, without ever losing its historic charm.
